Gamercraft - Challenges

How to allow players to improve?

As a Product Designer on a permanent contract at Gamercraft, a Brazilian platform specializing in organizing tournaments where players can earn money, I contributed to enhancing the gaming experience. The goal of the project was to introduce progressive challenges to make the platform more engaging, while allowing users to improve their skills in a fun and rewarding way. I designed a progression system inspired by skill trees, which strengthened user engagement and motivated players to participate.

Collaborative workshop: Setting the foundation

To align stakeholders and clarify expectations, I led a "6 to 1" workshop where each participant proposed ideas for structure and user journeys. This collaborative process helped identify the main mechanic of the project: progressive challenges designed to encourage user engagement.

First design iterations

Building on insights from the workshop, I created functional prototypes that included:

  • A smooth, intuitive navigation system to track progress.

  • A progression tree where each goal unlocks the next, driving participation.

  • An attractive reward system to motivate users to go further.

User testing: Refining the solution

User research proved challenging due to the linguistic diversity of users. I recruited English-speaking testers to gather feedback. Sessions revealed necessary adjustments, such as clearer challenge rules and refined user expectations regarding rewards.

Notable feedback: “I use the platform to earn money and pay for my studies, so this kind of feature is really cool.”

Outcome and project conclusion

Although the project was put on hold due to strategic changes, this experience allowed me to refine my iterative design methodology and tackle the challenges of user research in a multilingual context. It enriched my expertise in game design and handling shifting priorities within a product team.
