Hive Connect - A social network for beekeepers

Creating an app for beekeepers

Together with a teammate, I designed Hive Connect, an app built for beekeepers. This hybrid social network combines a forum and a tool-sharing platform. We managed the entire project, from initial research to design and user testing, ensuring the proposed solutions met the real needs of users.

The origin of the idea

The idea emerged after visiting an exhibition by Antoine Pointcheval, a renowned Marseille-based artist, and conducting several discussions with beekeepers.

Key insight:

Connected hives, while innovative, don’t address the real needs:

  • Too expensive for professionals with large-scale operations.

  • Not a priority for hobbyist beekeepers.

The main challenge? Beekeepers lacked a centralized space for collaboration, advice, and equipment sharing.

The solution: Hive Connect

We envisioned an app with the following key features:

  • Connect with nearby beekeepers.

  • Ask questions and get quick answers.

  • Locate apiaries.

  • Facilitate equipment sharing among users.

Organization and research

Pour comprendre les besoins, nous avons :

  • Mené des entretiens utilisateurs pour valider les hypothèses.

  • Animé des ateliers collaboratifs avec une apicultrice pour prioriser les fonctionnalités.

Design and testing

We followed an iterative process:

  1. Ideation: Applied the 6-to-1 method to generate and refine ideas.

  2. Prototyping: Built interactive wireframes on Figma.

  3. User testing: Collected regular feedback to validate and optimize user flows.

A design system for consistency

We developed a design system to ensure coherence, including:

  • A library of visual and functional components (icons, buttons, typography).

  • Documentation on Zeroheight to align designers and developers.

This system accelerated development and prepared the app for future scalability.

Next steps

The app is currently under development using Flutterflow, a no-code tool. We continue to test and refine the user experience while adding new features identified with beekeepers.
